Lesson 2
Essential Calculations

Lesson 2 Objectives:

1. Perform calculations related to amount conversions.
2. Perform calculations related to distance conversions.
3. Calculate surface areas of a variety of pool shapes.
4. Calculate water volume for a variety of pool shapes.

Lesson 3
Contamination, Water Problems,
and Disinfection

Lesson 3 Objectives:

1. Recognize the various types of fecal and non-fecal related illnesses.
2. Identify the procedures for handling fecal related contamination.
3. Identify the operating practices that will help prevent the spread of diseases in the pool environment.
4. Identify the basic concepts of water balance.
5. Calculate and correct water balance using the saturation index.
6. Identify common chemicals used to balance water.
7. Identify the various water problems that can occur as a result of improper chemical adjustment.
8. Calculate the proper amount of chemicals to be added to the water.
9. Recognize the difference between disinfection (sanitation) and oxidation.
10. Recognize the factors to consider when choosing a disinfectant.
11. Identify chlorine compounds frequently used to disinfect water.
12. Identify basic chlorine chemistry.

Pool and Spa Water Chemistry

4. Identify the various methods of chemical testing and the proper testing techniques.

Water Circulation and Filtration

Lesson 5 Objectives:

1. Identify the basic concepts of circulation and recirculation.
2. Perform basic circulation system calculations.
3. Identify the basic concepts of filtration.
4. Perform basic filtration calculations.
5. Identify the types of energy loss.
6. Name methods to prevent energy loss.
7. Identify design considerations for air circulation.
8. Recognize operational practices that will improve air circulation.

Lesson 6
Spas, Hot Tubs, and Therapy Pools

Lesson 6 Objectives:

1. Recognize the benefits of hot water spas and therapy pools.
2. Identify the operational and maintenance concerns for hot water spas and therapy pools.
3. Recognize who may be at risk while using a hot water pool or spa.
4. Identify how to safely use a hot water pool or spa.

Lesson 7
Facility Safety and Recordkeeping

Lesson 7 Objectives:

1. Identify ways to prevent access into an aquatic facility.
2. Identify ways to reduce the risk around, and in, the water.
3. Identify safe ways to handle and store chemicals.
4. Identify ways to increase effectiveness in the event of an emergency.
5. Recognize the importance of recordkeeping and the areas it impacts in the operation of aquatic facilities.
6. Identify the types of documentation necessary for the operation of an aquatic facility.
7. Recognize how proper documentation and record keeping impacts the responsibilities of the management of an aquatic facility.

Lesson 8
Maintenence

Lesson 8 Objectives:

1. Identify the importance of a maintenance plan and the various aspects of an effective maintenance plan.
2. Identify the causes of water loss, the various problems that can occur with pool and spa heaters, pumps, motors, and filters, and how to troubleshoot the problems.
3. Identify the aspects of performing renovation, where to find help with renovations, and the qualifications desired in outside contractors.
